Jack Burke, writing under the nom de plume AMBrose, began writing these poems seven years after his first direct experience with Avatar Meher Baba, his Beloved.
It seemed to Jack that his Master had stripped him of everything he held dear – everything, that is, except Himself. Jack found himself sitting in an empty coffee shop in downtown San Francisco at three in the morning in a space of total aloneness, as far as this world was concerned; his only company was a cigarette, a cup of coffee, a pen, and a blank sheet of paper. He felt irresistibly compelled to begin writing – and to his tremendous surprise, as he began to write, he felt as if a door had opened. He had stepped over a threshold to gaze upon a vast expanse of uncharted territory.
134: Dead Man Walking
O’ Beloved,
It occurred to me the other day
Amidst the noise, the commotion and all this endless talking
That something about my life with You,k the path, the way
Left me feeling that I was nothing
But dust to be, a dead man walking
What a weird awareness to have had
Made me realize why it was Your wish to awaken us
For it has nothing to do whether we’re good or bad
Rather that we wake up or miss the Avatar’s bus
Funny how these words come as my mind goes
Reminding me that dying to one’s false self
Is an actual happenstance
That I must accept life’s eventual blows
Forego being a slave to reaction’s raves and rants
To remember not to go off half-cocked
When something really good comes along
For doing so, Your work becomes blocked
Once again I’m a singer without a song
So, I give these words to You O’Lord
As I pass them on to anyone who’ill hear
That a feeling lost we cannot afford
Is that “love is all that matters”
To this we ever hold dear

O’pathfinder
Stay in tune, stay on line
Keep leaving the dust behind despite the ego’s cry
Soon, soon all My lovers will really be Mine
“Come all unto Me” the wish that I go by
